Plant Pick: Barren Strawberry

If you’re looking to plant a low maintenance, good xeric rock garden plant, the Barren Strawberry (Waldsteinia ternata) is a good choice for Spring. This plant can adapt to many different soil types and can handle drought conditions very well. In the first month of early Spring, the barren strawberry bears several yellow flowers among its basil-like evergreen leaves. Plus, this plant likes shade to partial sun and forms a groundcover mat at six inches tall. The Barren Strawberry gets its name from its “strawberry like” growing patterns, spreading by runners and covering a space relatively quickly. This plant makes a great edging plant as well, growing along paths and between step stones too.
