How to Effeciently Water your Yard

A lot of homeowners take pride in their lush, green lawns and landscaping. It’s a boost for the neighborhood and makes your outdoor home environment a pleasant place to relax and play. Therefore, it is important to learn how to water your landscaping the right way, to keep your lawn healthy and you happy.

Here are a few irrigation tips to get you started:

1. Check your community watering restrictions. Certain regions may have experienced droughts and implemented laws that restrict your outdoor water usage. Make sure you abide by the laws.

2. Only water the grass when it needs it. Not just for water conservation reasons but most people don’t know that overwatering your lawn can cause your grass to develop fungus and certain diseases. Depending on the type of grass you have, temperature, humidity and even wind – all these attributes can affect how much water your lawn needs.

3. Water your lawn deeply to encourage deep root growth. To encourage the roots to grow deeper, water your grass only when it needs to be watered and make sure you water it enough to penetrate the root zone. If you do too many shallow waterings, you actually encourage weed germination. For a bluegrass lawn, you probably want to moisten the soil 6-8 inches but for most others the water should penetrate to 8-12 inches.

4. Watering early in the morning reduces loss to evaporation. If you water your lawn using the sprinklers between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. on a hot day, you cut down on the time water evaporates before it hits the ground.
