Picking a Palette for Your Colorado Landscape

Home / Uncategorized / Picking a Palette for Your Colorado Landscape

Color, texture and form – these are the aesthetic elements of design. And just as you would deliberately design a color palette for the interiors of your home, the color palette of your landscape should be chosen thoughtfully in order to enhance the overall look and feel of your property. Here are a few strategies for choosing the right color palette for your Colorado landscape.

1. Drive it home: A tried-and-true way to achieve a beautiful landscape design, as Fine Gardening reminds us, is to select a palette that will complement the colors of your home’s exterior. If the paint color of your home is mostly warm or cool colors, you can choose your palette accordingly to match. Or, you can choose a palette that creates contrast with your home’s exterior as in the example below.

2. Employ color psychology: One way to pick a color palette for your landscape is to decide what feelings you want the space to evoke. If you want a serene, Zen-like landscape, you may want to stick to cool colors like green and blue. On the other hand, if you want a whimsical landscape, you may want to design a palette with joyful pops of bright yellow and pink. Start by choosing one color that you most associate with the feeling that you want your landscape to evoke.

3. Take it for a spin: Landscaping Network suggests using a color wheel, which can be an invaluable tool when choosing colors for your landscape. To achieve a cohesive look that is still interesting, you can select analogous colors, which are colors that are found next to each other on the color wheel. These can be used to achieve harmony while still creating variation and movement. Contrasting colors appear on opposite sides of each other on the color wheel and can be utilized to create drama and add bold accents.
